I am always looking for opportunities to encourage artists to develop and strengthen their creative personas and ecological knowledge..

I'm available to teach short or long courses on art informed by science and science informed by art.
Other topics I can teach on: live insects in art, transgenic art, non-human communication.

These talks are tailored for creative people but are open to everyone.

TEACHING STATEMENT

Alexis is an educator who specializes in art informed by science and science informed by art.

Students who make the most interesting art are those who know about something, those who are engaged in observing the world through a specialized lens whether it is completely novel, or an established line of thinking and doing. Artists and poets who seek knowledge. As a  teacher my main goal is to give permission to indulge in deep hyper focused learning, in any topic that interests them. I model my curiosity and enthusiasm. I invite them to geek out with me. I especially encourage my students to explore ways to express the non monetary value of life.

To validate their curiosities, to permit them to identify and perform as x actualized members of their communities… to support and encourage them to develop personas, bodies of knowledge and modes of communication. To demonstrate how to connect with interdisciplinary practitioners.

Specialize in artists who can use assistance to direct the attention of their viewers to ecology, to the meaning of wildness and our relationships to it. Or in creating ritual to support mourning or connection. (surrogate cultural actions.)

My experience as the director of the Biophilium since 2014: Designing and leading research expeditions and intensive study sessions. Liaisoning between and holding space for artists and scientists to express themselves, their enthusiasm, points of view and insight. Lecturing on art made in collaboration with living systems, and on biology. Leading biology and wildlife appreciation workshops in laboratories and in the field.

A large body of knowledge of bioart, large body of knowledge of biology especially ecology, mycology and ornithology, but also extensive experience with botany. And other fields of biology.

strengths: Asking questions, interpreting ecology, science, and art and making cross disciplinary connections.
