WE ARE ALL GATE KEEPERS Each of these gates is a gesture of care to ease passage for local wildlife. I take down settler log and rail fences and rebuild them into gates high enough for wildlife, too low for most humans. The old fences were made of the Cedar forest that once stood here, built to mark boundaries between farms and settlements. My gates stand to mark the transition between the dangerous road and the safety of the meadow, a retired farm now allowed to rewild into self willed wilderness. I cut old wire fences where fur is snagged. I know they can jump over or climb under, but it’s a symbol of welcome and recognition of the value of the comfort of nonhuman's. The gates host native climbing plants like Wild Cucumber and Wild Clematis and are regularly used by White Tailed Deer and Wild Turkeys. The Biophilium Earthship stands in a wildflower meadow. It is the only safe passage for local deer- as all the neighbors have livestock, electric fences, dogs and guns. The Deer nest in our meadow. It's a safe place to sleep and to leave their Bambi's while they forage. Wild Turkeys use the meadow as a lek dance floor. This project trains my focus on wildlife trails and the flow of local ecologies. So far these gates are on crown land or private land with permission. The dates on the trail cams are not accurate. |
